Keeping Calm in Ako Timatanga

Our inquiry topic this term is Peacekeeping and in Ako Timatanga we have had numerous great discussions about how to keep the peace with others. Ako were particularly interested in how to identify their emotions and keep themselves calm when faced with upset emotions.

Emotional regulation is an important skill for building relationships and academic success. As per our last blog post, social skills coaching is a vital element of life in Ako Timatanga and something we highly value.

By introducing stories and videos with characters who were learning to emotionally regulate themselves, we gained insight into how we can do this ourselves. We also created tools (e.g. stress balls and calming jars) to help regulate our emotions and keep the peace with others.
