Parent Trustee by-election:
In accordance with by-election guidelines, the Board of Trustees are pleased to advise that Scott McMahon has been duly elected to the Board as a parent trustee, following the receipt of only one nomination at the close-off date.
The Board is excited by the valuable skills that Scott brings to the team, particularly those which will assist the property sub-committee as it progresses the 10-year property plan (an upgrade of all of our classrooms).
Jodi Hermond – Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert:
The Board of Trustees would like to congratulate Jodi Hermond on being selected as a Microsoft Innovative Educator (MIE) Expert. The MIE Expert program recognises global educators who are using technology to pave the way for their peers in the use of technology for better learning and student outcomes.
Jodi’s selection to the 2017-2018 MIE Expert program is recognition of the effort she has put into incorporating Microsoft technologies in innovative ways in the classroom, and will enable her to collaborate with innovative educators around the world.
New Principal recruitment process:
The process to recruit a new Principal has begun and is on track for a new appointment to commence in Term 1, 2018. As part of this process, the Board has conducted surveys with staff, selected senior students, and parents and caregivers to understand the characteristics and qualities each group sees as being most important for our new Principal. The Board would like to thank everyone who has participated in this process.
Advertising for the role will commence from Monday, 11 September 2017, with applications closing-off in early October. All shortlisted applicants will be interviewed by the Trustees on Saturday, 18th November 2017.
The Board will continue to provide updates as the process advances.
The Board will be seeking further input from the wider school community on several important topics this year, including cohort entry (when new entrants start school in groups, at the start of each school term, rather than on their fifth birthday), creating a safe and caring climate that deters bullying, and identifying areas requiring improvement in governance practice.
The Trustees believe it is important that the community has a clear voice in how the school operates, and encourages all parents and caregivers to take the opportunity to have their say on these matters.
Further details about each of these surveys will be provided in upcoming Bulletins.
10-year Property Plan:
The Board has appointed DLM Architects to assist in the preparation of the 10-year Property Plan, and is currently compiling condition assessment reports to determine the current state of our buildings, as the first step in this process. From this, the priorities for capital and maintenance works will be identified.
Over coming weeks, the Board will also engage a specialist to conduct an asbestos survey on all buildings in the school (in New Zealand, a significant proportion of buildings are likely to contain some form of asbestos, particularly those built, altered or refurbished between 1940 and the mid-1980s).
From 4 April 2018, building owners who have identified the presence of asbestos in the workplace, must prepare and review an asbestos management plan as prescribed by the Health and Safety at Work (Asbestos) Regulations 2016. This plan must contain information about the identification of asbestos, decisions on how any risk caused by asbestos is managed, and procedures for detailing incidents or emergencies involving asbestos. The owner must ensure the management plan is kept up-to-date and a copy is readily accessible to any worker who intends to carry out work at the workplace.
Given the age of our buildings, the Board has deemed it prudent to carry out these surveys to ensure it is prepared to meet these new obligations (if required).
