Principal Appointment – Malcolm Laurence

The Board of Trustees is delighted to announce that Malcolm Laurence has been appointed as the new Principal of Pukeoware School, commencing Term 1, 2018.

Malcolm has 30 years teaching experience comprising of 15 years classroom teaching within Years 3 to 8, followed by 6 years as a fully released Deputy Principal of Maungatapu School, Tauranga. Malcolm has been a fully released Deputy Principal at Pukekohe Hill School for the past 9 years, and is currently its Acting Principal.

Malcolm has extensive curriculum leadership experience, currently co-leading Maths and English, and has a wide pedagogical knowledge, including Inquiry Learning and Assessment for Learning. Throughout the interview process, Malcolm demonstrated he was proficient in analysing data, reporting on student achievement, and identifying variance and next steps. He clearly sets targets which set an expectation that all students will experience success in learning. Malcolm also has demonstrated experience in pastoral care, and is proactive in managing family and student issues.

As a senior manager, and Board of Trustees staff representative, Malcolm has extensive experience in school organisation, management, and governance, including school self-review, policy and planning, charter development, budget and financial management, and the development of shared goals and vision.

Malcolm is also a ‘local’, residing within the Pukeoware School zone.

The lengthy and in-depth nature of the appointment process, conducted with assistance from educational and recruitment experts, Kea Education, aimed to have us appoint the “best person for the job” as described in the State Sector Act. The Trustees are confident we have found the right person for this important role.

We congratulate Malcolm on his appointment, and are looking forward to working with him. We will arrange opportunities for Malcolm to meet staff, students, parents and the wider community – and we will advise of opportunities to do so as soon as plans are finalised.

The Board of Trustees also wishes to thank Kim Michie for stepping into the role of Acting Principal during this time of transition, and trusts that everyone in our community will continue to support her, our staff, and the children throughout the remainder of the Term.
